Survivor’s Ode
by Sally Dallas
Intrusive and persuasive, methodical in its approach
Tenacious and relentless, invisible like a ghost
Lurking in silent waiting, in a dimension just out of reach
The unsuspecting victim is oblivious to its breach
The discovery brings sorrow, questioning your defeat
Armed for serious battle, inner strength will not retreat
Emotions provide fuel, for an overwhelming fear
Not for oneself, but for those you hold most dear
It’s infamous and notorious, determined not to fail
You resolve to be victorious, medical science will prevail
Keeping it at bay becomes an all-encompassing goal
The relentless obsession begins to take its toll
More than a disease, a lesson you’re forced to heed
Gaining valuable perspective on what you truly need
An unwelcome intruder, but not the culprit that it seems
Gratitude is reborn, with passion to fulfill your dreams
With positive determination, you’re sincerely renewed
Thoughts forever changed, perception of time reviewed
Every day is precious, relationships truly treasured
Enduring love of family, impossible to be measured
Ambivalence replaced with knowledge, faith and hope
Confidence to overcome, profound ability to cope
The battle is not over, but you have learned to abide
You’re a cancer survivor who knows God will decide
