Initiative to Provide Follow-Up Care for Cancer Survivors Launched

Journey Forward will distribute survivorship kits to healthcare providers and cancer survivors in select states. The kits will explain the importance of follow-up care plans, offer tools for providers to generate these plans, and offer interactive tools for cancer survivors to participate in the process. Wallet Card Helps Doctors and Patients Stay Connected

The American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute have developed a card that patients can carry in their wallets that will guide them to ASCO’s patient information Web site and NCI’s Cancer Information Service where doctors and patients can connect with each other if they are displaced from their homes due to a disaster situation.

Social Security Compassionate Allowances - Fast Track Application ProcessFor People with Cancers and Rare Diseases

Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced the national rollout of the agency’s Compassionate Allowances initiative, a way to expedite the processing of disability claims for applicants whose medical conditions are so severe that their conditions obviously meet Social Security’s standards. Social Security is launching this expedited decision process with a total of 50 conditions. Over time, more diseases and conditions will be added. A list of the first 50 impairments -- 25 rare diseases and 25 cancers -- can be found at:
