The Chemo Blues

by Debra Paul

Inspiration image

I started the chemo
I was warned of the news.
All my hair would fall out.
I’d be bald from all views.

I hated the thought,
but knew I could do it.
After all, it was others
who would have to view it.

There’s many good things
That have come from this deal.
I can change my look
whenever I feel.

A big choice of wigs
and scarves and a turban.
It’s keeping me calm
so I don’t crave bourbon.

When menopause gives me
flashes of hot,
I just whip off the wig
and the heat is forgot.

If I don’t get the chemo
I’ll probably be dead,
so I’m learning to love
my bald little head.
