I Live on the Edge

by Doris Zughoul

I live on the edge.
Not in some risky, romantic sort of way,
not like a sky diver or a race car driver.
Not even like a mountain climber.
Cancer puts me on the edge,
for I am a survivor.
I know the reality of life and death.
I live on the edge.
It’s really not so bad.
So many live
without really living at all.
But I look around
at miniscule moments of meaning.
A smile, a kind word,
shining summer sunlight,
lingering lilac fragrance.
Powerful, adrenaline-pumping
spontaneous opportunities.
I live on the edge.
