Survivors Canon

(On Completion of Chemotherapy and Radiation)

by Helene Parris

I crossed a gorge the other day,
through a canyon vague and dark.
The bridge across was made of ropes,
the planks from reeds and bark.

I turned to find my guides had gone,
and left me on my own.
A voice called out in reassurance,
“You are never all alone.

Keep to the trail, don’t look back,
there are others up ahead.”
But the forest was filled with nurturing,
now uncertainty lurks in its stead.

“There’s life further ahead, I promise you,
with a sense of who you are.
You’re stronger now, much wiser too.
Your courage has taken you far.

Admit chance over doubt, abide by the positive,
determination will carry you through.
Believe in yourself, rely on your instincts,
and the pathway will loom into view.

See each day as a preface, while
gathering life’s treasures,
from the simplest of everyday gifts.
Herald each sunrise, and champion yourself.
Your valor will never leave you adrift.”
